Fun Box Telephone
Kids can dial their way to number mastery with this funky telephone made from recycled tissue boxes.

Steps

You need two tissue boxes (or similar-sized boxes) to make this telephone craft. Cut one box vertically in half. | |

To make the phone's base, use glue gun or tacky glue to attach one box half with the whole box. | |

3. | Notice the other tissue box half has a curved shape on one side. Trace this curve on the opposite side. | |

4. | Cut along the line. Your box half now looks a bit like a phone's handset. | |

Find a small box piece with the same height as the inside of the handset. Use glue gun or tacky glue to attach this at the center of the handset. | |

6. | Punch a hole on one end of the handset. | |

7. | Punch a hole at the lower side of the phone base as well. | |

8. | Paint the box telephone with your desired color of acryic paint. | |

9. | Prepare a long curly ribbon. Insert one end of the curly ribbon through the hole at the bottom of the phone base and the other end through the hole on the handset. Tape the ends in place. | |

10. | Measure the length and width of the telephone handset and draw the same dimensions on construction paper (paper's color should be the same with the color of your painted telephone). Extend the length by about 5 inches. Cut the piece. | |

11. | Fold the piece to fit nicely onto the telephone handset. | |

12. | Apply glue on the center box of your handset before laying down the construction paper piece permanently onto the handset. Glue the ends in place as well. | |

13. | Cut 2 circles from craft foam or colored paper and glue onto the handset to mark the earpiece and the mouthpiece. | |

14. | Cut twelve 1 in. x 1 in. squares from craft foam. Use markers to write the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0 on ten of the squares. Draw fun shapes on the remaining two squares. | |

15. | Glue the number keys onto the telephone, making sure to put them in the right order. Each fun shape sits on one side of the number "0". | |

16. | You may decorate your telephone further with stickers, puffy paint, glitter glue, or sequins. | |

17. | Use the telephone to practice numbers. You can practice by dialing small digit numbers like "12" or "24" or challenge yourself by dialing up to 5 to 7 digit numbers. | |
