An easy way to make the segments of a caterpillar is to cut out several circles out of construction paper. However, we wanted to try something new by using the base of several paper cups to make the caterpillar segments. If you want to give this material a try, start off by cutting out the base of a paper cup. |

2. |
Be sure to trim off cleanly. |
 |
3. |
Make at least 5 round segments and as many as 10 to 12 for an extra long caterpillar. |
 |
4. |
Write a number on each segment using crayons or oil pastels. Try to make heavy strokes when writing the numbers. |
 |
5. |
Paint on each numbered disc with watered-down watercolor or poster paint. The paint will not stick to the portion with crayon strokes so your numbers will show through. This technique is called crayon resist painting. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. |
 |
6. |
Cut a background from construction paper. Make sure it's big enough for your caterpillar. |
 |
7. |
Draw some details for the background such as grass, clouds, sun, or other things you'd like to add to your picture. |
 |
8. |
Glue the numbered segments on your picture to create the caterpillar. Don't forget to put them in the correct order. |
 |
9. |
Draw a face on the number "1" segment, with the digit "1" serving as the caterpillar's nose. Instead of drawing the eyes, mouth and antennae, you can also glue on any of these suggested materials:
- eyes - wiggle eyes or beads
- mouth - sequin or short piece of pipe cleaner
- antennae - feathers or pipe cleaner

That's it! Allow the picture to dry before putting it up on the wall. |
