Hatched Chick

Decorate a large pompom into a a cute hatched chick and nestle it into an eggshell made out of egg carton cups.

Hatched Chick craft

Materials

  • Cardboard egg carton
  • Large yellow pompom
  • Yellow feathers
  • Orange craft foam, felt or construction paper
  • White or pastel-colored tempera or poster paint
  • Wiggle eyes
  • White glue
  • Scissors

Steps

Step 1 Hatched Chick craft Ask for an adult's help1. Cut one cup from an egg carton. Cut the lip in a zigzag pattern to simulate a hatched egg.
Step 2 Hatched Chick craft Ask for an adult's help2. Cut a second cup from the egg carton. Trim it a lot shorter than the first one, then cut the lip in a zigzag pattern similar to the first cup.
Step 3 Hatched Chick craft 3. Paint the outside of the egg carton cups with white or pastel-colored (e.g. baby pink or sky blue) tempera or poster paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.
Step 4 Hatched Chick craft 4. To create the chick, glue on a pair of wiggle eyes onto a large yellow pompom.
Step 5 Hatched Chick craft 5. Make the chick's beak by cutting out 1 or 2 small triangles out of orange craft foam, felt, or construction paper. There are two ways to attach the beak:
  • One triangle - glue one triangle flat onto the pompom (great option for younger kids).
  • Two triangles - glue the base of each triangle at an angle (as shown in photo) to create a three-dimensional beak.
Step 6 Hatched Chick craft 6. Glue the chick inside the taller egg carton cup.
Step 7 Hatched Chick craft 7. Create wings by gluing on a pair of feathers along the sides of the chick.

*If the feathers are too long, trim them at the base before gluing them onto the chick.
Step 8 Hatched Chick craft 8. Finally, glue on the shorter egg carton cup on top of the chick's head.
