1. |
Make the clay tile chips by following Steps 1-4 from our main Clay Tile Mosaic page. |
 |
2. |
Paint the tile chips with poster paint and set them aside to dry. |
 |
3. |
Once the painted tiles have dried, make the base for your paper weight out of self-hardening clay. Use your hands to shape it or use a mold (e.g. large cookie cutter), if you have any. Make the shape fairly thick. |
 |
4. |
Arrange the tile chips like a jigsaw puzzle on top of the clay base. Remember to leave some space betweeen each piece. If you have difficulty finding a good fit, especially with the last few pieces, you can trim and cut the tiles into a more suitable size and shape. Once you have laid out the pieces, press each tile into the clay base, carefully supporting the sides of the base to retain its shape. |
 |
5. |
Allow the clay to set. This may take a day or more, depending on the size of your work and the relative humidity in your area.
When your mosaic has completely dried, brush over a thick layer of white glue or decoupage medium (e.g. Mod Podge) on the tiles.
In contrast to white glue, decoupage medium will waterproof your work. Apply it on all areas, including the bottom surface of your mosaic. |
 |
6. |
The white glue or decoupage medium will dry clear and will give the tiles a glazed look and brighter colors. |
