Box Living Room

Recycle boxes and paper cups into a cozy miniature living room.

Materials Needed

  • Boxes
  • Styrofoam board, illustration board
    or any sturdy board
  • Gift wrap paper or textured paper
  • Paper cups
  • Construction paper
  • Craft foam
  • Scotch tape
  • White glue
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Poster paint
  • Paint brush
  • Crayons or puffy paint
  • Cotton
  • Green feathers
  • Green drinking straws
  • Sand

  • Always let your child use child-safe scissors.
  • Keep the glue gun out of children's reach.
  • Watch out for this sign Ask for an adult's help. It means you need an adult's help for the particular step.

Steps

Step 1 Box Living Room 1. Find boxes to turn into your living room's sofa and chairs. Square ones are great for the chairs and a bigger rectangular box is needed for the sofa. Scout for smaller boxes for all the of seat's back rest. Tape any open flaps for each of the boxes.
Step 2 Box Living Room Ask for an adult's help2. Ask an adult to help you gift wrap the boxes. Match the colors of the chairs with the rug and other furniture you plan to add.
Step 3 Box Living Room 3. Assemble and glue the matching boxes to form the sofa and chairs.
Step 4 Box Living Room Ask for an adult's help4. Cut Styrofoam board or illustration board for your living room's base.
Step 5 Box Living Room 5. Cut a slightly smaller rectangle from gift wrap paper to make a living room rug. Glue it at the center of the Styrofoam board.
Step 6 Box Living Room 6. Glue the sofa and chairs onto the board base.
Step 7 Box Living Room 7. Trim off 3 paper cups until they are about 2 ½ inches in height. Paint the paper cups with colors that compliment your living room color scheme.
Step 8 Box Living Room 8. Glue one of the painted paper cups in the middle of the living room set. This will serve as the base for the coffee table.
Step 9 Box Living Room 9. Draw and cut a circle from construction paper. Glue it on top of the paper cup to complete the coffee table.
Step 10 Box Living Room 10. Fill the 2 remaining painted paper cups with sand. We are going to make these into flower pots.
Step 11 Box Living Room 11. Create leaves by cutting leaf shapes from green construction paper. Plant the leaves into the sand.
Step 12 Box Living Room 12. You may also use green feathers as leaves.
Step 13 Box Living Room 13. Make some flowers by cutting flower shapes from craft foam or construction paper. Glue a green drinking straw at the back of each flower. Plant each stemmed flower at the center of the flower pot.
Step 14 Box Living Room 14. Position the flower pots on both sides of the sofa. Glue them onto the board base.
Step 15 Box Living Room 15. To make pillows, cut two identical-sized squares from craft foam. Glue the two squares along three sides. Let the glue dry thoroughly. If you use glue gun, the adhesive will dry almost instantly.
Step 16 Box Living Room 16. Decorate one side of each pillow by drawing patterns with crayons or puffy paint.
Step 17 Box Living Room 17. Once the glue (and puffy paint, if you used them) is dry, stuff the pillows with cotton. Do not overstuff to avoid the seams from opening. Seal the fourth side with white glue or glue gun.
Step 18 Box Living Room 18. Position the pillows on the sofa and tape them in place.
