Safety Guidelines

  • Young kids (3 to 8 years) should use child-safe scissors.
  • Round out any sharp edges when cutting plastic film.
  • Watch out for this sign Ask for an adult's help. It means an adult's help is needed for the particular step.

Steps

Step 1 Easter Egg Sun Catchers 1. Cut out an egg shape from construction paper and use this as a pattern for tracing several egg shapes on a transparency film. Use a permanent marker for tracing.
Step 2 Easter Egg Sun Catchers 2. Draw designs on the eggs.
Step 3 Easter Egg Sun Catchers 3. An alternative to Steps 1 and 2 is to print out this Easter egg template. Put it under the transparency film and trace on the eggs, including the designs.
Step 4 Easter Egg Sun Catchers 4. Glass paint is the ideal medium for painting on plastic film. However, we will show you how to make a homemade version. Dispense liquid (or clear) glue on your palette.
Step 5 Easter Egg Sun Catchers 5. Add 1 to 2 drops of food coloring and mix. You can add more food coloring to achieve deeper hues.
Step 6 Easter Egg Sun Catchers 6. Some tips for painting the eggs:
  • Use a fine-tipped brush.
  • If you think the paint is too light-colored, add more food coloring to achieve deeper hues.
  • Do not overload your brush with paint since this will result in colors mixing on the eggs.
  • Use cotton swabs to "erase" the paint and start over.
Step 7 Easter Egg Sun Catchers 7. Toddlers and younger kids can join in as well. Let them paint on the eggs with 1 color and use their fingers or cotton swabs to make dots and stripes.
Step 8 Easter Egg Sun Catchers 8. When you're done painting, set the eggs aside to dry.
Step 9 Easter Egg Sun Catchers Ask for an adult's help9. Once the paint is dry, cut out the eggs. The homemade glass paint is water-based so try not to handle the eggs with moist hands.
Step 10 Easter Egg Sun Catchers 10. Use double-sided tape to stick the egg sun catchers on glass windows or panels.

  • If you used our water-based glass paint recipe, you can actually wash off the paint and use the eggs for another painting session or for next year's Easter egg crafting.
  • The Easter egg template you printed out for Step 3 can be used as a coloring page or re-used for other Easter egg crafts like our Creative Paper Eggs craft.
