Halloween Stained Glass Candle Holder craft

Materials

  • Glass jar or glass container
  • Clear liquid glue or white glue
  • Food coloring
  • Liquid dishwash soap
  • Paint brush
  • Palette
  • Black acrylic paint or black permanent marker

Steps

Step 1 Halloween Stained Glass Candle Holder craft 1. The ideal medium for painting on glass is glass paint. Instead of using commerical glass paint, you can make this homemade version:

Pour some clear liquid glue or white glue on your palette. Add 1-2 drops of liquid dishwash soap and a few drops of food coloring. Mix well. Test the mixture's hue by painting on a small section of glass or any transparent material. Add a few more drops of food coloring to deepen the hue of your glass paint.
Step 2 Halloween Stained Glass Candle Holder craft 2. Find a glass container or glass jar that would look nice as a candle holder. Clean the container or jar before painting on it with the glass paint. You may notice that homemade glass paint, especially if you used clear liquid glue, tends to recede or form bubbles on some areas of the glass. Simply paint over the bubbles.
Step 3 Halloween Stained Glass Candle Holder craft 3. You don't need to paint the inside or the bottom of your glass jar. Both the clear liquid glue and white glue-based paint will dry clear.

Step 4a Halloween Stained Glass Candle Holder craft 4. Once dry, you can decorate your stained glass jar with silhouettes of Halloween-themed characters or images following any of these three options:

a.) The easiest and most doable option for kids is to draw images with a black permanent marker. You can draw all around the jar or focus on a specific section. Don't forget to shade inside the images.
Step 4b Halloween Stained Glass Candle Holder craft b.) The second option is to paint the images with black acrylic paint. You can make a light sketch of the images using a washable marker or white board marker before painting.
Step 4c Halloween Stained Glass Candle Holder craft c.) The third option involves drawing images on paper, coloring both sides of the images with black permanent marker, cutting out the images and gluing them (use white glue) around the glass jar.

Instead of drawing images, you can also print out Halloween clipart or other images. I printed out mine from this Halloween cat template and set my printer to page scaling mode to reduce the size of the images.
Step 5 Halloween Stained Glass Candle Holder craft Ask for an adult's help5. Once the paint or glue has dried, ask an adult to help you put a candle inside the stained glass jar. The light from the candle will highlight the silhouettes of the Halloween images against a colored stained glass background.

*Keep in mind that the homemade glass paint recipe is water-based, so try to keep moisture away from your finished work.
