1. | Make a papier mache using a balloon as the mold. The steps are outlined here. The papier mache will dry in 2 to 3 days. |

2. | Once the papier mache is completely dry, pop the balloon inside the papier mache. Remove the bits of balloon latex. | |

Cut a 2 to 3-inch diameter opening around the air hole end of your papier mache. | |

Punch 4 evenly-spaced holes around the opening. | |

Use a pencil or a sharp object to make a small hole at the top of your papier mache balloon. | |

6. | Loop one end of a pipe cleaner. | |

Insert the free end of the pipe cleaner through the bottom opening of the papier mache. Pull it all the way through the small hole. The loop on the pipe cleaner serves as a stopper. | |

8. | Loop the protruding part of the pipe cleaner to create a handle for your hot air balloon. | |

9. | Prime your papier mache with white acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely. | |

10. | Think of a nice design for your hot air balloon. Paint the balloon using poster paint. | |

11. | Trim a paper cup to the desired height for your hot air balloon's basket. | |

Punch 4 evenly-spaced holes around the rim of the paper cup. The placement of these holes should match those on the papier mache balloon. | |

Attach the papier mache balloon to the basket by tying strings to connect the holes on the balloon to those of the basket. | |
