Seed Mosaic Napkin Rings
Make these earthy and charming napkin rings upcycled from toilet paper rolls decorated with a variety of seeds.

Supplies Needed
- Toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls
- Various seeds, beans and grains
- White glue or tacky glue
- Box cutter or craft knife
- Acrylic paint or poster paint
- Paint brushes
STEPS
1Gather some toilet paper rolls.
Collect some toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls. One TP roll can make three napkin rings while a paper towel roll can make seven.
2Cut the TP roll into sections.
A TP roll typically measures 4½" long. Cut the roll into three equal cross sections, each section measuring about 1½" wide.
A paper towel roll, on the other hand, measures around 11" long. You can divide it into seven 1½" cross sections.
3Paint the TP roll sections.
To turn the TP roll sections into napkin rings, paint the outside with dark or earthy shades like black, brown or dark green. You can either use acrylic paint or poster paint. Once done painting, set the napkin rings aside to dry.
4Prepare some seeds.
Prepare various seeds, beans and grains.
5Apply glue.
Once the paint dries, you can now start decorating them with seeds.
Take one napkin ring and apply a thick layer of white glue or tacky glue on a section.
6Sprinkle some seeds.
Sprinkle seeds over the glue. Continue adding seeds until you've filled that section.
7Apply glue on the next section.
Once the glue on the first section has set, apply glue on another section.
8Sprinkle some seeds.
For contrast, choose another type of seed to decorate this section. Sprinkle seeds over the glue.
9Continue decorating with seeds.
Continue decorating the napkin ring with seeds, gluing the seeds by section. Do this until you've filled the entire napkin ring. Let the glue dry completely.
10Seal in the seeds.
Once dry, seal in the seeds with more glue. Apply a thick layer of white glue over the seeds with a paint brush. Spread the glue evenly with the paint brush, covering even the spaces between the seeds.
11Make more napkin rings.
Decorate the other napkin rings with seeds. Check out the section below for more creative ways to place the seeds on your napkin rings.
12Use the napkin rings.
Once all the napkin rings are completely dry, you can finally use them. They'll make lovely accents for a garden table setting or a Thansgiving meal.
More Ideas
Make a more ordered design.
Instead of sprinkling the seeds, you can make a more ordered design by placing the seeds one at a time. You can line them up at the edges of the napkin ring or arrange them to form images or patterns.
You also don't have to fill the entire napkin ring with seeds. As seen on this particular napkin ring, the painted background showing through provides a nice contrast.
In this napkin ring, we lined up the seeds on the edges as well as around the middle of the napkin ring. The remaining areas were sprinkled over with seeds.
A fun option for younger kids.
Mix two or more types of seeds on a plate or shallow container. Apply a thick layer of glue on the napkin ring, then let kids sprinkle, spoon on some seeds, or roll the napkin ring onto the plate of seeds.
