Craft Foam Pencil Toppers
Jazz up your pencils with these fun craft foam pencil toppers. Various patterns and templates are included for super easy crafting!
Supplies Needed
- Craft foam sheet in various colors
- A4 or Letter size paper
- Pencils
- Scissors
- White glue
- Wiggle eyes, small buttons, beads, pom-poms, yarn, pipe cleaners, glitter glue and other decorative materials
STEPS
1 Choose the pencil topper shape.
Think about what kind of pencil topper you want to make—a flower, a star, an animal, or even a boy or girl's face. Print out any of our printable shape templates or draw your own shape on A4 or Letter size paper.
2 Cut out the shapes.
Cut out the shape or shapes you printed out. You only need one of each shape to use as a pattern for drawing shape outlines on craft foam.
3 Draw shapes on craft foam.
Use the paper shapes as patterns for drawing shape outlines on craft foam. Place the paper shape on a sheet of craft foam. Use a pencil to trace around the edges of the paper shape.
4 Cut out the craft foam shapes.
Cut out all the craft foam shapes.
5 Glue the foam shapes together.
Assemble your pencil topper by gluing the craft foam pieces together with white glue. Let the glue dry thoroughly.
6 Mark the center.
Using the sharpened tip of a pencil, mark the center of your pencil topper.
7 Punch a hole.
Gently push the sharpened tip of the pencil through the center of the craft foam topper. Continue pushing until the pencil punctures through the foam.
8 Slide the topper to the top.
Ease the craft foam topper up to the top end of the pencil.
9 Decorate the topper.
Carefully remove the craft foam topper from the pencil. Decorate the topper either by drawing details on it or by gluing all sorts of fun accents.
For this sun topper, we glued a pair of wiggle eyes and cut out a mouth from scraps of craft foam.
10 Place the topper on a pencil.
Once the glue dries, you can place your awesome craft foam topper on your pencil.

Make some fun animal pencil toppers.
Bat - a bat pencil topper is perfect for Halloween! We decorated ours with a pair of wiggle eyes and a mouth cut from orange craft foam.
Cat - draw stripes or patches on your cat using markers. Make a fluffy snout by gluing some cotton just below the topper's center hole.
Fish - create some colorful fish pencil toppers. We added texture to our pencil topper by decorating the fish with small buttons and pieces of string.
Butterfly - make a lovely butterfly pencil topper. Add details by gluing fun accents like small pom-poms, buttons, sequins or foam shapes.
Create the butterfly's antennae by cutting a 5-inch long piece of pipe cleaner. Fold the piece in half to come up with a "V" shape. Curl the tips of the antennae downwards. Glue the antennae at the back of the butterfly.
Make a heart or star pencil topper.
Basic shapes like a heart or a star make lovely pencil toppers. We layered 2 to 3 foam shapes of increasing size for these pretty star and heart pencil toppers. The stars were accented with some glitter glue while a length of rickrack was glued on the heart to create whimsical edges.
Create an apple pencil topper
To make an apple pencil topper, print out the fun shapes set and cut out the apple shape. Trace around the apple shape twice—once on red craft foam and then on brown craft foam. Cut out both apple foam shapes. Cut away the stem on the red apple.
Glue the red apple over the brown apple, aligning both pieces at the edges. Cut out a pair of leaves from green craft foam. Glue both leaves behind the stem. Once the glue dries, punch a hole at the center of the apple to complete your apple pencil topper.
Make a cute kid pencil topper.
Create a cute girl or boy pencil topper. Decorate a circle craft foam with wiggle eyes, draw a mouth and make some hair out of yarn, thin strips of crepe paper, or craft foam cut into the desired hairstyle.
Draw a circle on craft foam by tracing around the base of a small bottle or any small object with a round base.
Cut out the craft foam circle and decorate with a pair of wiggle eyes and a mouth. You can either draw the mouth or glue a short piece of yarn or craft foam cut into a mouth shape.
Cut a few strands of yarn to make the hair. For a girl pencil topper with long hair, we cut twelve 4" long pieces of brown yarn. Glue the yarn hair on the pencil topper.
