Seed Mosaic
Create a lovely mosaic picture using a variety of seeds, beans and grains.

Supplies Needed
- Seeds and grains (e.g. beans, rice, corn, sunflower seeds)
- Nut shells (optional)
- White glue or clear liquid glue
- Poster board
- Small spoon
STEPS
1Prepare various seeds.
Collect seeds of all sorts of shapes, sizes and color. Rice, beans, bird seed, corn kernels, and sunflower seeds are examples of seeds that you can use.
Nut shells like those of pistachios or peanuts will also look wonderful in your seed mosaic.
2Cut poster board.
Cut poster board into the desired size for your mosaic.
3Sketch a picture.
Think about a design for your mosaic picture and make a light sketch on the poster board.
4Put some glue.
Work on your mosaic a section at a time. Start with one shape or section in your picture. Squeeze some glue inside the shape. Spread the glue with your finger or a paint brush.
5Put seeds on the glue.
Fill the shape with seeds.
6Fill the picture with seeds.
Continue gluing seeds a section at a time. Use different seeds for each section.
You can use a small spoon to put the smaller seeds over the glue. Do not worry about putting seeds over the outlines of the shapes. Once the glue dries, you can slide the excess seeds off the paper.
Seeds can also define the lines in your mosaic picture. Check out the line of black seeds in the middle of the leaves as well as those bordering the grains on the ground.
7Remove the excess seeds.
Once you're done filling the picture with seeds, let the glue dry completely. Once dry, tilt the poster board so that the excess seeds slide off the picture.
Some of the seeds inside the outlines of the picture may come off as well. Just fill the gaps in with glue and more seeds.

Besides nut shells, you can also accent your seed mosaic with spices like star anise and cinnamon sticks. They look quite nice and smell nice too!

When it's time to dispose of your seed mosaic picture, you can remove the seeds from the poster board and plant them in small pots. You can also ask an adult to help you cut the mosaic into smaller pieces and plant them inside pots or on garden plots.
